Man, that ending hit hard. The contrast between the technical talk about Deertrails and Pope’s raw grief was incredible. That line about his heart having to keep beating after losing everything! Burrows holding Tilda at the end really drives home what’s actually at stake here. Great chapter.
With the scene on Mars mostly established now - the colonies, the politics, the setup at home - it now becomes time to dive into the characters and their motivations a bit more. Pope’s background with Seven Craters, and his loss there, is a prominent thread throughout the story - and the way he reacts to his losses, and the way that changes over the course of the story, is also (once the editting and fine-tuning is done) going to reflect what Burrows is going through as he struggles to justify his own actions and responses to the developing political situation.
Intriguing. The workshop's atmosphere is so vivid, I can practically smell it. Pope's question, "how did this even get to happen?", resonates. Was it a fundamental flaw in the mission's initial architecure, or a more immediate operational problem? Makes you ponder the human element in complex systems.
Any interaction of humans and systems will lead to slippages - and the perimeter gaps that developed are one of those. Of course, whether it was fully accidental or perhaps orchestrated… is another question entirely, which only gets answered (partially) later on.
