I actually had to go back and tweak the wording around the "last matches" to better capture the original intent of this sequence. I wonder if the implications will be seen, or if they are still too obtuse...
It brought to my mind the Jack London story, in which the ‘last matches’ really were the last. That’s why I wondered about him.
